Introduction
The learning objectives for this page are:
- How to customise the viewing experience of your table
In this section ‘Table View Functions’, we will learn more about what capabilities are available within Stat-Xplore for you to better customise your own bespoke table. Subsections labelled with ‘(Advanced)’ are features of Stat-Xplore are beneficial but not essential for the everyday user.
Feel free to browse and read whatever is relevant to you or read the whole section. If you do, we recommend that you read it in order as it has been designed to optimise your learning experience.
Sorting
To organise your table in a way that is more preferrable to you, you can click the arrow buttons to sort the table. The number of times you click matters,
- Your first click will sort the column/row in ascending order
- Your second click will sort the column/row in descending order
- Your third click will sort the column/row in default sort order
To locate how to sort the table based on the values in columns, please look at the screenshot below.

Using Shift-Click
Rather than manually clicking though all the values that you would want to include in your bespoke table, another way you can quickly select multiple values is to use Shift-click. Rather than just one value, this selects a range of values.
For example, suppose you want to add all values of the ‘Age (bands and single year)’ field from 16-19 to 40-44. You would:
- Expand the ‘Age (bands and single year)’ field and select the first item in the range (in this case, 16-19):
- On your keyboard, hold down the Shift key and click the last item in the range (which in this case would be 40-44).
- Stat-Xplore will then automatically selects all the field values in between as seen below:
- Click either the ‘Add to Row’ button or the ‘Add to Column’ button on the top left-hand side of the menu to add the values to the table. Alternatively, you can drag and drop to the ‘Row’, ‘Column’, or ‘Wafer’, option.
- Stat-Xplore will input your chosen values in your bespoke table as seen below:
Using Select all
Rather than manually clicking and adding fields to a table, another way would be to use the Select all drop-down menu to quickly select a large number of field values. This is particularly useful for hierarchical fields where you can choose to select all the items at a particular level in the hierarchy.
For example, in this practical demonstration,
- In your currently open table, click once on the arrow to the right of the ‘National - Regional - LA - OAs’ field to open the drop-down menu.
- Select you desired field from the drop-down list. Stat-Xplore will then select all the available values at this level in the hierarchy.
- If you expand the field, you have selected, you can see that Stat-Xplore has selected all the available values at this level in the hierarchy. At the top of the menu, Stat-Xplore also tells you how many items are currently selected (in this case, 11 items):
- Once you are happy with your choice, click the ‘Add to Row’ button. Stat-Xplore will then add all the selected values to the row headings of your table.
- Finally, click the ‘Retrieve Data’ button to perform the cross tabulation.
