Dataset: Housing Benefit claimants

Field: NUTS: Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics

Description

NUTS are a single hierarchical classification of spatial units used for statistical production across the European Union.

At the highest level of the hierarchy are the individual member states of the EU. Below that are NUTS levels 1 to 3, then Local Administrative Units (LAU) levels 1 and 2.

Stat-Xplore contains breakdowns for NUTS Levels 1 to 3 inclusive and LAU level 1 for Great Britain, based on the address of the HB claimant. As it is possible for the claimant to reside in a different Local Authority (LA) to the one administering their HB claim it may not always be possible to make direct comparisons between geographies based on administering LA and those based on residence of the claimant.

Quality Statement

NUTS Areas are derived from the postcode of the claimant’s address.

Postcode is present for over 99 per cent of claimants but, for some claimants, the postcodes are incomplete or missing. To improve the quality of postcode information, the claimant’s address is processed through address cleansing software.

For postcodes that are still incomplete after address cleansing, NUTS area has been assigned where possible using postcode district.

It is possible that errors can occur in the recording of address / postcode (both on form and inputting onto computer system within the local authority processing the claim).
