Database: Households on Universal Credit

Field: Bedroom Entitlement

Description

When claimants receive a housing element as part of their Universal Credit entitlement, there may be a reduction to their standard entitlement due to the 'removal of the spare room subsidy' (RSRS). The value of UC Housing element claimants receive is based on the number of people in the household and the size of their accommodation. This applies to all working-age tenants renting from a Local Authority, housing association or other registered social landlord. It does not apply to the private rented sector.

A household is entitled to a certain number of bedrooms before any reduction is applied. This depends on things such as the age and sex of children staying in the household (as they may be expected to share), and the number of people staying in the household.
