Dataset: Population Estimates

Description

The mid-year population estimates relate to the usually resident population on 30 June of each year. Population estimates for areas within the United Kingdom from mid-2002 onwards have been provided here.

Mid-year population estimates are the official source of population sizes in-between censuses, covering populations of local authorities, counties, regions and countries of the UK by age and sex. The estimates use the census definition of people who are "usually resident" in the UK for 12 months, excluding short-term migrants, and counting students at their term-time addresses.

After the results of a new census are known, the population estimates over the previous decade are subsequently revised to ensure a consistent time series. In light of the 2011 Census results, the mid-2002 to mid-2010 population estimates were revised at national and subnational level. These latest population estimates for mid-2012 to mid-2020 relate to figures prior to the Census-2021 rebasing exercise.

Comparing population data to other collections on Stat-Xplore

Population data has been added to Stat-Xplore to enable users to compare population data to the Departments statistics with greater ease. However, we ask users to be mindful when comparing these two datasets as they may pick up on trends within this data which have been caused by changes in DWP policy.

If you wish to gain further insight in to the statistics on Stat-Xplore, we recommend accessing our statistical bulletins. These bulletins contain commentary on the Departments statistics and explain the trends observed.
