Field: Measures

Description

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) helps with some of the extra costs caused by long-term ill-health or a disability if you’re aged 16 to 64. PIP started to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for people aged 16 to 64 from 8 April 2013.

Statistics are based on PIP claims with entitlement in Great Britain on the reference date.

Measure: Mean Financial Award

Description

There are two components of PIP – for daily living and mobility needs. Each component can be paid at standard rate, or enhanced rate for those with the greatest needs.

For each component a list activities are scored depending on how much support, and the type of support, the claimant needs to do the activity. The scores for the activities are added together to give a total for each component. For each component, they will get the standard rate if they score between 8 and 11 points. For each part, they will get the enhanced rate if their scores add up to 12 points or more.

The amount of money that the claimant receives changes when it is revised in the budget. The following table shows the amount that a PIP claimant receives at a point in time:

The mean Financial Award measure is calculated by taking the sum of the weekly rates for Daily Living and Mobility components for each claim where an award has been made, as at the date of interest (clearance date for awards in the clearances data, and caseload date for all claims with entitlement). Note that this includes zero amounts where a claimant receives a nil rate for a particular component. The average (mean) is then calculated for all the individual amounts for cases within a tabulation.

Within the clearances table, mean award amounts are only calculated based on clearances where an award is made – disallowed and withdrawn cases do not contribute to the mean shown in the tabulation.
