Quality Statement
Location analysis must be presented as three-year averages, as single-year estimates are considered too volatile. Although the FRS sample is large enough to allow some analysis to be performed at a country level, it should be noted that no adjustment has been made for regional cost of living differences, as the necessary data are not available. In the analysis here it is therefore assumed that there is no difference in the cost of living between countries, although the AHC measure will partly take into account differences in housing costs.
To calculate a three-year average, output estimates for at least three consecutive financial years:
Click on 'Financial Year', tick the required year and add to column. To remove the latest financial year, go to 'Financial Year', tick on the latest year and then select 'Remove' at the top. This should leave just the required financial year.
Alternatively, output several years as numbers in a table and manually calculate the percentages for each year separately in Excel. From this, three year averages can be calculated as below.
An example calculation is:
Year 1 estimate = 120,000
Year 2 estimate = 145,000
Year 3 estimate = 110,000
Three-year average estimate (Year 1 to Year 3) = (Year 1 estimate + Year 2 estimate + Year 3 estimate)/3 = (120,000 + 145,000 + 110,000)/3 = 125,000
Data relating to 2020/21 is not available in Stat Xplore due to data quality concerns affecting many of the HBAI estimates calculated below UK (headline) level for that year. Further details can be found in the technical report which accompanied the release of the 2020/21 statistics. This report details the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the size and composition of the FRS sample.
All rolling three-year averages calculated and published for any period including 2020/21 are based on the remaining two available data points only. Therefore:
