Dataset: CMS Paying Parents

Field: Method of Payment

Description

The method that Paying Parent used to pay Child Maintenance liabilities, as recorded at the end of the calendar quarter. This may be agreed upon by the Child Maintenance Service and the Paying Parent, or, if necessary, enforced by the Child Maintenance Service.

Classification

Applicable to: all Paying Parents with ongoing maintenance due via the Collect & Pay service

    - No Collect & Pay Liability

    - Bank Head Office Collection Account: a method of payment where Paying Parents can make cash payments to the Child Maintenance Service through their bank or building society using paying in-slips. This is a non-preferred method of payment; the paying parent must provide a reason for using it.

    - Direct Debit: where the Paying Parent has agreed to pay by Direct Debit.

    - Deduction from Earnings Order: a method of payment where the Child Maintenance Service deducts maintenance directly from the Paying Parent’s wages. Primarily used to enforce payments, but can be set up voluntarily.

    - Deduction from Earnings Request: Similar to a Deduction from Earnings Order, but used for Paying Parents employed in the Armed Forces.

    - Deduction from Benefits: a method of payment where the Child Maintenance Service deducts maintenance directly from the Paying Parent’s benefit payments. Can be enforced or used voluntarily.

    - Standing Order (Default): used temporarily where the CMS has been unable to agree another method of payment with the Paying Parent. The CMS will request that the Paying Parent sets up a standing order for the specified amount.

    - Payment Offset: in cases where both parents claim child maintenance from the other (may occur where siblings live with different parents and/or where the primary care of a child has moved from one parent to the other), the CMS can offset maintenance owed by one parent against maintenance owed to them by the other party.

    - Unspecified

    - Standing Order (Voluntary): where the Paying Parent agrees to set up a standing order for the specified amount. This is a non-preferred method of payment; the paying parent must provide a reason for using it.

    - Not available: information is unavailable for the quarters ending December 2018 and June 2019, see quality statement.
